2011 DK national cargobike champ //report//
This last week end i flight with my son to Copenhagen to race in the 2011 cargobike danish champ. Organized by Michael Coolville-Andersen (one of the most efficient bicycle blogger with Copenhagenize.com) and a lot of others buddies, , it took place around the Calsberg beer bewery place.
Nothing to say on the city you don’t already know. Bike Paradise ! When in Paris we have 100 cars for one bike on streets, it’s just the reverse among viking streets with all the rules respect a normal human could/must have. So focus on the saturday’s race.
Around 50 riders were sign in. There were several category. Individual and Team races, Old timers race, 3 wheels and the most appreciated from the audience, the girls’one. Most of them were on Bullitts (2/3), some bakfiets, some batak, three wheels (Winther, Christiana, …) and the classics Long & Short Johns.
4 heats were fixed and each first 3 were qualified to the final. The track was really perfect as the race format. I was excepted something like the ECMC or an Alleycat. No way ! Just a danish speciality, a kind of cargo sprint.
The track was around 1km long with up & down hill where the best riders took a 50 km/h easily, a huge straight line with wind in your face, turn on the pavement section, some narrow turns and then the start/finish line where we have to load.
The weather was an autumn start. Windy and some small rain each hour. Enough to put some spicy touch under our wheels !
The rules were these for everything. One lap empty, then load two car tires, a wooden beers box and a stock of newspapers then go for some 3 others laps. Seems to be easy but it was not.
Hans Fogh has prepared for me a wonderfull singlespeed Bluebird. I was quite “afraid” about the ratio for the track but it works perfect. This guy really knows his bike and “his” riders.
To be ready, it was important to dedicate as well the place. So I and my mate Bjoern Kieldby fix some fuel before the start.
so ready to GO !
The INDIVIDUAL RACE
Then the heats were started and the 12 most fast riders go to the final.
So START !
The 1st lap went well, some of the riders really went fast after the downhill and take the left turn crazy.
& the last turn was the perfect place to shoot action riders
the load on the pit lane was crazy as hell !
then 3 laps full loaded !
After 4 laps, the race is over.
Claus is the winner and could wear the gold of the 2011 DK Cargobike Champ. He’s the fastest and the strongets far away.
Just behind the fight was hard.
My mate Bjoern took the second and got some congrats from Hans.
I’ve done my best and i’m so proud to finish 4th. First on a singlespeed bike and surely the most happy frog on earth for this day
as i showed to my favorite “boss” mate.
The Podium. As you could see even Claus has some Chris Hoy legs replica he’s also a kind of funny !
Get back to train to beat him next year.
The GIRLS RACE
The same as the men but with an special audience totally under the love of the riders !
Hard enough but each of her done well. Sign took the gold and bring the 1st medall to the Fogh family.
but Sign was too strong, just notice the gap between her, the second and the third just in 3 laps. Crazy !
and hard enough to be off at the end !
The TEAM RACE
Totally open. Nevermind the age, sex or the bikes just race !
This time, each team was made by 4 riders, each one race for one lap. Totally crazy.
My team was the International so well name one. Made by me, Bjoern, a crazy icelandic rider and the most fast old english man i’ve ever seen (around 60y old !)
but we totally fucked up the race with 2 flats on the front wheel !
The winning team was the Bullitt one. Then Hans got his Gold to home !
The OLD TIMERS RACE
So normal to have a special race to celebrate our roots. And all the “over 35kg of steel” were rided by strong and awesome riders. Enough to get a second youthness !
the extra bonus was a small KID Cargobike race, because in DK, children are full part of the game !
and the day was off.
Time to held Hans & Sign’s house, drink beers and laugh during the night.
Thanks to all for this unbelievable day.
That’s now the smile my face for a long time !
a special thanks to Anders Hviid who let me use most of his wonderfull picture. Unless him i was unable to illustrate as well my words. So don’t miss to check his so glossy eye among his gallery where u could find some very fresh UCI Copenhagen Bike Champ pics.
and all my love to the Bullitt spirit. We are the future.
don’t miss the Facebook open group to know more about this event.
And in one word : TAKK !
